Visa × Izipay — Valentina Pavez

Rediseñar el momento del pago.Redesigning the moment of payment.

Lideré la investigación, diseñé y testeé prototipos, y participé en la definición del MVP.With Visa Consulting & Analytics, I worked on the experience of Izipay’s payment terminals in Peru. I led the research, designed and tested prototypes, and helped define the MVP.

Diseñar desde el contexto real.Designing from the real context.

We analyzed more than 200 interfaces and tested hypotheses with users to understand what made charging hard: too many steps, overloaded screens and unclear actions.

Cada decisión tenía que funcionar en terreno.Every decision had to work in the field.

Based on the research, we defined principles to simplify flows, improve legibility and adapt the experience to Peru’s retail context. Testing also let us drop ideas that created friction, like suggesting tip percentages that felt like pressure.

Discovery & Research

Descubrimiento e investigación

A rigorous foundation.

Una base rigurosa.

Before designing a single screen, we built deep knowledge of the POS ecosystem — global, regional and local — and of the real behaviours inside Peruvian stores.

What we found

Lo que encontramos

Four recurring friction points.

Cuatro puntos de fricción recurrentes.

Contextual inquiries, interviews and heuristic evaluations surfaced the same story across very different merchants: overloaded screens with unclear hierarchy, excessive confirmation steps at checkout, redundant navigation with inconsistent terminology, and no local customisation for Peruvian business culture.

Design Strategy

Estrategia de diseño

Four principles that shaped every screen.

Cuatro principios detrás de cada pantalla.

The redesign focused on reducing cognitive load and increasing task efficiency — applied consistently across 4 POS models and 270+ screens.

Progressive disclosure & clear feedback

Revelación progresiva y feedback claro

Show only what's needed at each step, with system feedback that responds to the user's action — not the system's state.

Custom flow logic

Lógica de flujo local

Adapted for real Peruvian POS behaviours: tipping, DCC, business-type workflows.

Accessible UI

Atomic & scalable

Atómico y escalable

A scalable design system that enabled fast iteration and easy handoff — unified icons, spacing and microinteractions.

Validated by evidence

Validado con evidencia

Every decision, a tested hypothesis.

Cada decisión, una hipótesis testeada.

We turned every design intuition into a falsifiable hypothesis and tested it with real merchants and customers.

For example, pre-set tipping percentages were refuted — users felt pressured into tipping, so we moved to manual, optional tipping.

Before & After

Antes y después

Small changes, big impact.

Cambios pequeños, gran impacto.

Two examples that show how research translated directly into design decisions — and how removing friction sometimes means removing features, not adding them.
